A: Yeast infections are very common, and nearly 3 out of every 4 women experience one at some point in their life. A yeast infection develops when the yeast normally present in the vagina grows rapidly and upsets the normal vaginal conditions. Sometimes, the use of hormonal therapy, antibiotics, or oral contraceptives can result in such an overgrowth of yeast. Because the vagina is a warm, moist place, yeast can easily grow there. To discourage overgrowth of yeast, avoid tight-fitting clothes and jeans, and non-ventilated clothing such as nylon panties, panty hose, hot tubs or wet bathing suits.
