How Holiday Stress Can Impact Your Body

By Dr. Taraneh Shirazian, OB/GYN and Monistat Ambassador

With the holidays in full swing, many people are getting ready to visit family and friends, kick off holiday shopping and enjoy some favorite seasonal treats. And while the holidays are a time of celebration, seasonal stress can often times creep up! With this being the busiest time of the year for so many, there is little time to stop and think about your own self-care, which can cause some unexpected strain on your health. Sometimes, just the slightest change in a routine can affect how the body is functioning, but with just a few quick daily check-ins, you can mitigate any holiday distress and enjoy festivities.

Being aware of your daily routine and how it may change during this time can help you navigate any potential symptoms if you end up under the weather. As general sickness tends to be heightened at this time of the year, you want to take extra care of yourself to avoid any troublesome infections from head to toe.

What happens during the holidays?

The holidays bring up busy schedules, long nights cooking and wrapping gifts and more times than not, people aren’t sticking to their normal everyday routine. Many people are attending holiday parties, eating lots of sweets and treats, consuming alcohol, and sleeping less than they should. This situation can lead to a weakened immune system that makes you vulnerable to infections.

During a time like this, there are simple things you can do to make sure you’re feeling good and able to enjoy every activity that pops up. You should put a focus on getting extra sleep, staying hydrated, taking vitamin C /zinc and trying to stay as healthy as possible. I encourage everyone to develop a wellness routine where they try and stay on track with diet, sleep and exercise even in times of high stress. While this is good to have throughout the year, around the holiday season, it can make all the difference in keeping you feeling healthy and happy.

What about vaginal wellness?

For those who also need to keep their vaginal wellness in check, this time of the year can cause some imbalance as day-to-day routines may change. Two common causes of this are the additional stress and extra sugar around the holidays that may throw off your vaginal pH, causing overgrowth of bacteria or yeast. Many find that they notice symptoms like irritation and discharge that could cause you to feel less than festive and looking for a quick solution. Instead of feeling uncomfortable or sitting out of any fun holiday moments with your friends and family, I recommend taking note of any changes in your normal discharge, redness, and/or itching and irritation.

Vaginal infections due to a change in your normal wellness routine are common but shouldn’t disrupt your holiday cheer. To get more info on symptoms, check out the MONISTAT® Symptom Checker to see if you might have a yeast infection. If you’re experiencing unfamiliar or new symptoms, it’s always best to check in with your gynecologist.
